Campaigners Against Misinformation and Disinformation in Liberia (CAMDL) in collaboration with the Liberia Translation and Literacy Organization (LIBTRALO) has hosted a Media and Digital Literacy Training for Liberian Language Translators, ensuring that no one is left behind in combating false information. False information endangers Liberia’s peace, rule of law,
democracy, development, and governance in Liberia.
Over twenty(20) Liberian Language Translators have been trained to verify online information using digital tools, empowering them to safeguard Liberia’s information landscape against false and misleading content. These translators will share their knowledge and skills with citizens who speak and understand only Liberian languages. At the training, the Liberian Language Translators also translated a short public message on how to verify information into nine(9) Liberian languages including Kpelle, Bassa, Gola, Dan, Gbandi, Mano, Vai, Lorma, and Krahn.
Taweh Johnson, Executive Director of CAMDL, stressed that the initiative is a big step toward promoting media and digital literacy as well as critical thinking skills in Liberia’s underserved linguistic communities, ensuring that all citizens know how to verify information, regardless of
the Liberian vernacular they understand.
Kolliyan Kolubah, President of the Language Association in Liberia, expressed gratitude on behalf of the participants to Campaigners Against Misinformation and Disinformation and the Liberia Translation and Literacy Organization (LIBTRALO) for the training. Kolliyan Kolubah further said Liberian Language Translators now know the difference between misinformation and disinformation and how to use digital tools and resources to verify information.
The training was held on Friday, April 25, 2025, at the Office of the Liberia Translation and Literacy Organization(LIBTRALO) in Kpelle Town, Bernard Farm, Paynesville.
